Thought I'd update y'all. I had a loose cup in an NOS Excel-too rear hub, causing all manner of incorrect adjustment and variability problems. Cups, cones and axle all checked out fine......all balls were in good shape and the correct size, so a process of elimination lead me to a cup rotating in the hub shell.
Chuck Schmidt said that Red Loctite had helped him, however, I suspect his cup was loose enough to pry out, then degrease and loctite in. In the case of my hub there were 2 problems: The cup was only a little bit loose, and I couldn't get it free from the shell at all......also, there is a dustshield pressed firmly into the shell, outboard of the cup, then the Aluminum shell seems to be peened over the shield, making it almost impossible to get at.
Well, I degreased all as best as possible. Then I got a minute hypodermic syringe(from a Diabetic friend), and applied "Permatex Penetrating Grade Threadlocker Green" to all the ridges between the shell and cup, then let it run around the gaps.
Wiped clean, then assembled tight using an old axle, spacers, and a couple of cones. Let sit 24 hours. I have only done 1 ride of 20 miles on it since, but it adjusted up perfectly, and has kept adjustment too. Far cheaper fix, $5.69, than a wheel rebuild and a new hub!!
This grade of Permatex I bought from NAPA Auto Parts, part # 765-1148. To break it will need 500 degrees of heat and 310 in/lbs of torque. In other words, it is a pretty permanent fix. What's the melting temp of Aluminum, anyway? As it is penetrating, it is specifically made for locking pre-assembled parts, which is what I had here.
Just thought that this saga might be of benefit to a few of you sometime, any may get you out of a jam more easily.
