Following the passing of Dave Staub, I sent a short little note to Andrea Cinelli, the son of Cino, as I recall Dave saying that he and Andrea were not that far apart in age.

Here is the translation and original Italian of the note that Andrea wrote back to me:

Caro Steven, DEAR STEVEN,

I AM VERY TOUCHED BY THE DEATH OF DAVE STAUB. IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY, HE HAD A CINELLI FRAME THAT MY FATHER BUILT FOR HIM AFTER HAVING ACCURATELY TAKEN THE MEASUREMENTS.

I RECALL THAT HE USED TO FREQUENTLY COME AND GO FROM OUR OFFICE AND HAD CONTACT WITH MY MOTHER WHO SPOKE ENGLISH WELL.

THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF HIS DEATH SEEM TO BE THE "EPITAPH" AT THE END OF THE "LIFE NOVEL." THE CIRCUMSTANCES, NEWS OF WHICH MUST BE VERY SAD FOR THOSE WHO REMEMBER HIM IN LIFE, ARE UTTERLY SINGULAR IN NATURE AND I DO BELIEVE THAT ONLY FEW ARE CONCEEDED THE POSSIBILITY TO PASS TO "BETTER LIFE" IN THE COMPANY OF THAT WHICH IS DEAREST AND WHICH HAS GIVEN OUR MOST HAPPY MOMENTS.

WITH MY MOST SINCERE CONDOLANCES, I JOIN IN THE GRIEF FOR "AN AMERICAN CYCLIST."
