Hi Doug,

I had my '74 Motobecane Grand Record painted this winter. Mark Chance from Texas who does it as more of a hobby than a business did it for me. I got his info while corresponding with him on a vintage frameset he had listed on ebay. (not sure if he's a CR list member). He also forwarded me a list of frames he owns and has been considered selling.

Anyway - he made the silver look old, yet new. Original patina kept intact. No idea how he did that, but it's wonderful. He took about 4 weeks to do the work - I wasn't in any sort of hurry. I supplied all of the custom-made replica decals for him and he applied them prior to the clear-coat. Hand-detailed the lugs, polished the chrome on the forks, all for about half of the price of the big shops.

I've been considering buying an old Merckx frameset to have painted in the 7-11 colors - when I do, I'll have him do it.

Feel free to email me off-list for more info.

Dave -below zero in Maine getting sick of the rollers.

Howdy folks.

I have a new-to-me Merckx that I intend to get painted in the relatively near future. I want to get a Faema replica paint job pretty much exactly like they offered in 1990 (white with red headtube and panel on seattube, Cannibal face decals on headtube and seattube panel). What I would like to get, if there is such a thing, is a job equivalent in quality to what might have come out of the Merckx paint shop on a great day. In other words, nice but doesn't have to be "complete and utter perfection" ;^) For instance, I would consider powdercoat for the white with wet red, decals and clearcoat if that works and anybody does it. Now I realize that it may be that anybody who can/will do this type of job only does the super high-end work..

I would love to hear from anybody who has had a frame painted in say the last year. What kind of job did you have done (details please), who did it, what did it cost, how long did it take and were you happy in the end? I think this is probably best offlist and directly to me, but you can be the judge of that.

Thanks,

Doug Van Cleve Chandler, AZ

P.S. I have a JB painted bike but it came that way. Otherwise no experience with any of this...
