As consumers we can choose to be influenced by marketing, mystique, or reputation at the expense of the truth. Our perceptions often times cloud reality. My perception of the bicycle business WAS one of folks like Masi, Cinelli, DeRosa, Pogliaghi, and other artisans filing, brazing, and fabricating every frame with their name on it. Today some folks may perceive Colnago,Guerciotti,Lemond,& Merckx as doing the same. This all becomes a part of brand identification and reality takes a back seat to our perceived image of a product. For this reason certain brands thrive on reputation alone.

i wasn't thinking "better" or not. i was just trying to discern the consumer's pov regarding the strength of the brand versus the fact that the product is so many generations removed from both the vig gig and the masical gig. as i wrote in another post, haro has, and torelli had, the legal rights to the name. there's no disputin' rasputin. i just was asking about the emotion involved when a consumer buys an 80s or 90s or haro masi. in this era, does that name carry the weight that it did way back when? e-RICHIE chester, ct

Oh you mean like an AMF Harley Davidson?

The Mondonico frames built for Masi USA in '96 were probably better than what Alberto was building concomitantly for Euro consumption. Were SoCal Masi's from '74-'83 (to keep inside the timeline) better machines than Vigorelli models of the same era? If so, which are the 'real' Masi's? The better ones, the ones with Faliero's authorized decal, the ones made at the center of the universe? Earnesto had his Colnago's fabricated all over the place right? Is a Csuka Singer a Singer, or a better Singer?

All rhetorical -- all with a smile.
