I've only been into vintage bicycles for about a year now and I my life has almost been completely taken over by them and so I don't unfortunately own any 30 year old shoes so the same question has been plagueing me. I've gone to clipless with most of my mid 80's indexed treks and such but I've kept most of my other rides with clips. I have a few suggestions for those who might be interested in purchasing some athletic shoes for riding with clips around town. I had an old pair of nike running shoes, they're laceless and are simply a slip on shoe. Very comfortable and the upper is a completely breathable mesh like material, sock are optional on these. I have wide feet as well but the soles are no where as wide as my other running shoes. I also just picked up a pair of Doc Marten's athletic shoes, they do have laces but the tongue is completely sewn into the shoe giving you a very snug fit. They fit nicely into my clips. They're a bit funky looking being black and neon orange but no more so then SIDI shoes or the other current cycling shoes. If anyone is curious I can send pics. Just figured I'd offer my suggestions.
