Tom: I am not sure what you mean here... Was that a plug, with another section of threaded steerer tube on top? Round stock.. Maybe this was a threadless steerer~ an AHead set style deal? McLean Fonvielle, builder of McLean/Silk Hope frames, did a radical repair to a Mercian of mine years ago. He simply cut off the steerer, attached an accurately cut (!) longer "top" by butt brazing it with silver. Scary but it seemed to work.
