Subject: [CR]drilled chain rusto resto

We removed a Cinelli Equipe 84 from the outbuilding ceiling and discovered that the nice drilled chain has a smooth, even coating of iron oxide all over it. Before I soak in anything and get out the brushes, any suggestions?

What came to mind was penetrating oil, and 'metal prep'( phosphoric-based material we used to spray on bare frames ptior to primer, like a liquid Naval Jelly. Another vivitor suggested non detergent motor oil. The chain links all pivot without crunching. it's never been used. The rest of the Cinelli survived well. some spots on the chrome lugs and crown that were rubbed out with mothers polish

Thanks in advance
