I agree, there is something strange about the Shimano date code list. I have a wheelset I personally built in 1974 with large flange 1st generation Dura Ace hubs (silver, not black). I just checked and both hubs are marked S D.

I notice the date code table on the CR website starts in 1976, so perhaps Shimano had a different code prior to then. Does anyone know?
