Sorry Dennis...I'm giving credit to an innovative Scotsman...and I quote...

One day in the 1830s, Kirkpatrick Macmillan, a blacksmith from Dumfries, Scotland, unveiled the first bicycle with foot pedals. Macmillan never patented his device, however, and it failed to catch on locally. Indeed, the inventor was briefly more famous for hitting a child while he was testing his contraption. He was fined 5 shillings - for causing the first road accident in history.
