Following Mike Wilkinson's reference to the tommy bar pedal and looking at the Paris picture the answer lies in the construction of the Chater Lea pedals. At the crank end next to the threading the spindle has a approx 1/4" hole drilled through for attaching or removing the pedal by means of tommy bar. This method is very useful for a removal because it does'nt slip unlike the normal pedal spanner.I do not know of any other pedal having this method I can assure its a great asset
