It happened because somebody crashed the bike, trued the wheel, and sold it to you. And you didn't check the tension on the wheel before you cut out the spokes.

Several years back, I brought a dozen or so rims to the dump. Some of them had my stickers on them, since I had built them up originally, and after the rider crashed and I rebuilt the wheel, there was certainly no point in taking off the sticker. But about a week later two "gentlemen" came into the shop carrying some rims. They said they had had them in their attic for a while, and that they were in excellent condition, and since they had my stickers on then, perhaps I'd like to buy them.

I declined their kind offer.
