Having lived through the start of the CPSC regulations working at a bike shop, the solutions and methods of compliance were non uniform.

An example, Campagnolo brakes and derailleurs changed in visible ways, but cranksets did not start coming in with chainguards save for the Raleigh Professional, perhaps Raleigh being too big to avoid being "checked".

Spoke protectors, to save the spokes from the chain came, reflector mounts had to withstand 50lb. of force and stay in alignment. Don't forget wheel reflectors! Never saw a box of Campagnolo pedals with reflectors in the box, but the Japanese mfg's such as MKS did.

Little caps and the other plastic "protectors" such as the Campagnolo adjuster covers "trumpets" and crimped on cable ends were required to answer the "puncture requirement". Stem & seatpost limit lines also happened. The stem limit line was pretty useful, as many a customer would otherwise come back for the free 60 day service and have it set way too high. The original reg. used a ballon like device that had to be placed in and around the bike and not puncture.

That said, never saw a Masi come out of the box with the CPSC requirements back then.

Some aspects were good, some were hard to work around such as trying to adjust shifting in spite of the protection, could not get the fron shifter cage close enough to the chainring.
