I thought we CR types were already sufficiently "apart" from other cyclists. I've been enjoying riding my Peugeot PX-10e on post-work rides and folks just cannot believe there's this nut out there passing them with lugged steel frame, non-indexed derailleur, frame pump, cloth bartape, leather saddle, toe-clips, leather cycle shoes, little white socks, wool shorts and, of course, Peugeot-Michelin jersey with old-fashioned mesh gloves. Only the helmet spoils it. If I didn't want to risk my noggin, I'd wear a Peugeot cap or a leather hairnet helmet and do my Tommy Simpson imitation. Actually it's been great chatting with riders about "the good 'ol days" of 60s-70s lightweights.... as long as they can keep up on their carbonfibre what's it.
If I want to really feel apart, like from another planet, I can just go into most cycle shops... honestly I don't even know what 90 per cent of the stuff is nowadays. I wouldn't know a Trek from a Cannondale from a Giant (so you mean Gitane and Falcon don't make bikes anymore?), or what those computer thingys do (it's like a Lucas cyclometer, right?) and as for those spandex body suits and wacky helmets... it's like a Cirque du Soleil clown costume.
So I think we're apart enough alright... except for this weekend when most of you will all be in one corner of this vast and wonderful country. And that's even more frightening!
