Because of the slanted parallelogram, the new derailleurs will cover a wider range without having the upper pulley grind against the larger cogs. If you adjust the spring tension in the SLJ to let the pulley clear a 28 tooth cog, the pulley will be further away from a 12 tooth cog than would be ideal. But it would still be much closer than a Super Record set up to clear a 28 tooth cog.
