The letter about George Brooks was written by a gentleman called George S.Smith in December 2002. He was then 92 years old.
My Fathers George Brooks frame is now in Arizona with i beleive a CR list member. A real classic british frame. George Brooks was trading definately in the early 1950's in Harringay he then moved to Bristol and set up a bike business there as the letter states. I think in the late 1950's.
In the letter there is a reference to the North Eastern Wheelers, I cannot find a reference anywhere to this club, all I can find is a 1937 reference to the North Eastern Road Club. This could be the same club as it is Walthamstow based. Does anyone know.
Most of this gentlemans letter is based on the North Eastern London cycling scene in the 1930's. He also mentions most of the North London makers you are all familar with, plus these which you might not know.
Stephens of Newington Green
Stokes Brothers of Walthamstow
Jack Lauterwasser Holloway Rd.
Williamson of Holloway Rd. & Willlesden Lane
Chapman (Hares Cycles) West Green Rd.
Kloots of Tottenham
Mayes of Palmers Green
Finally George Brooks frames were very popular. There were three types of transfers. 1. With his photographic portrait (London). 2 As per my fathers frame (London) and the later Bristol version.
Stan and Peggy Bray stalwarts of the Southern Veteran Cycling Club and the Fellowship of Cycling Old Timers rode George Brooks bikes.
