Turns out, in the end, a friction lever by any other name is still a friction lever (BTW, an index shift lever with a friction mode will even do).
With all due respect, I think the main complaint with Campagnolo's rear derailleurs (GS, Record, NR and SR) had to do with their poor shifting with touring gears, something that they were never designed to do as they were _racing_ derailleurs.
