My wife owns an '82 Calzone. At the time, the thru-BB cable routing seemed like a nifty gimmick. In actuality it was not very practical. You could not use a plastic sleeve to protect the bearings, nor could you use a phil-type cartridge BB. Thus the bearings became contaminated more easily, requiring more frequent BB overhauls to keep them clean and operating smoothly.
