One of the things I've used it for is when several more or less identical items are due at different times. I'll snipe on all of them at the price I want to pay, and keep doing it until I win one. Then I cancel the rest of the snipes and go away happy. I got a whole case of (off-topic) SCSI hard drives for about $12 that way...
