My concern was that it looked like a big chip was taken out of the face of the adjustable cup side of the BB shell (I'm looking at the BB pic, third from the top on the right). The dark spot at the bottom of the groove looked like the BB cup itself to me at first glance, indicating some material was missing from the face of the shell. However, breaking out the magnifiying glass, you can see a ring of yellow paint all around the BB cup, so it looks like all of the face of the BB shell is intact, or at least any missing material is de minimis, which wasn't what I first thought I saw.
The general consensus is that this is either a seamed BB, or else a cut and weld repair. If the paint is original, then probably I'm looking at the seam that had some paint chipped off and my bad eyesight made me think the shell was more damaged than it was.
I do agree that the paint is yucky, but that's easily fixed. Just takes money.
Thanks to everyone who helped.

Tom, what specifically concerns you? I'm more curious about the funky-looking "groove" in the spoon of the downtube socket - what the heck is that? A bulge-forming flaw? Greg Parker Dexter, Michigan

Thomas, That looks like a forging mark or a weld seam if the BB is stamped and welded. Anthony Mezzatesta Mezzatesta Custom Cycles 909 Berkley Manor Dr. Cranberry Twp, Pa 16066 724 498 4191
