I have just spoken to a lady who "went out" with Mick Dawson in the 1950's. She tells me that he was extremely handsome, was employed in his father's butchers shop, but was a fairly modest rider. He dropped out of the sport after about four years. She is at a loss to explain how he managed to beat Simmy. Maybe Tom punctured? The star of the Hull Thursday RC at that time was Billy Holmes who also went to the 56 Olympics. He won the 1961 Milk Race. In 1955 Billy won the English 25 Mile T.T. champs and Mike Dawson was second counter in the winning Hull Thursday team (of three). I guess that was the peak of his career. Interestingly the former girlfriend is Billy Holmes's sister Mickey and she is at 71 still racing! Regards Ray Green, Brighton, England
