Hello List and Seasons Greetings,

I have a 2nd generation solid titanium Super Record axle. When they switched to the solid axles did the cups change? And, if so, are the new axles compatible with the older BB cups and how can you identify the old cups from the new? I will be installing a 1981 SR crank-set with this BB on a 1981 Raleigh Team.

Also, I would be interested in purchasing a pair of the recently discussed 1st generation SR brake levers if anyone has a pair of which they need to rid themselves.

Thanks Again and Happy Holidays.

George Allen Lexington, KY George: As far as I know, only the spindle changed. You should not have a problem using a later spindle with cups that were originally with an earlier BB. Make sure that you use the proper SR bearings, though. They are smaller than NR ones. One thing I'm not sure about though - are there different SR / C-Rec / 1990s Record aluminum-plus-steel-insert BB cups, or are they all the same (other than threading and handedness issues)? Super Record and C-Record BBs used 14 pcs. of 3/16" ball bearings per side. Early 1990s Record used 14 pcs. of 7/32" ball bearings per side. I sure hope that the cups were all identical, and the difference was in the spindles, but I don't know for sure. Does anyone know? I guess it would surprise me a bit if they changed the cups minutely in 1990, but anything is possible! Greg Parker Ann Arbor, Michigan
