Sheldon, Peter & JB,

Since it was my letter to another list member that was the genesis of this thread, let me explain. On the 23rd, I posted to the CR list an email about Jean Alavoine's pre-WWII bike and photo I acquired. As noted in my post, I had been pursuing these items for several years.

I received several emails from list members, many asking for photos once I take physical delivery of the bike. One list member sent me a concise email that simply stated: "bfd...brilliant ?????? deal". My interpretation of the intent of the author of this email was not altogether positive. In fact, I thought it was downright rude.

Like many people, I receive a significant amount of email every day. To minimize the quantity of individual email, I receive the CR list in digest form. When a person emails me and the header reads something like: "Re: [CR]New Acquisition - Pre WWII Track Bike" I am assuming that, unless otherwise noted, the email was posted to the list as well as myself. In the case of this specific thread, I sent my follow-up response to the list with a cc to the list member.

I certainly feel that on or off-list, interactions between members of the CR community should be presented in a manner that you would be comfortable taking if your mother were standing next to you.

The list member in question responded back to me (off-list) with an explanation of his "bfd" comments. While he did not apologize, he felt I "took it wrong.glad you got a great deal. brilliant means brilliant." I accept his comments at face value. From my perspective, I prefer to consider this matter closed and would rather this thread fade away.

Apparently he got a response from another list member which was the quote that follows: "bfd...brilliant ?????? deal". Brett posted his response to that list member with a second letter through the CR List. That letter is also below, and contain the "bfd...brilliant" response that Brett recieved from said list member. Although you can look up the CR members handle and name on the archive that sent this uncalled for response, I've deleted it from the letter below, as he possiblymight have heard from Dale already, and I'm really not sure what really provoked his response to Brett Hortons letter about the track bike, as it appears it was offlist.

I did send my thoughts to said list member, that I thought his response to Bretts first letter was rather rude, unkind, and really uncalled for, and I did so offlist. I've had a few dealings on sales, and otherwise with this list member and have always had a good working relationship with this member and I was a bit taken aback by his comments. Hopefully this is all overwith as we really don't need any arguing, and nasty comments on or off the list.
