Vacillation would be the normal state of affairs since the overriding principle here is the oft repeated "You can't replace originality."
The first thing I always do is to clean and overhaul the bike as best as humanly possible and ride it for a while before deciding whether to undertake plating and paint and so forth. I agree, there's no need to rush the decision. You can't put the toothpaste back in the tube.
