Subject: [CR]Campag Rally Rear Mech - Why ? With What ?

Ahoy !

I don't want to ignite any possible old controversy regarding the Rally rear mech; however, I remain puzzled as to how Campag may have envisioned its use. Of course, my assumptions could be compleatly off-base so, I’d welcome the correction and the lesson in rear mech. design and function.

I understand the Rally to be a merely a long cage NR; that is, the parallelogram side plates are the same length as those of the NR.

So, what is the purpose of the long cage? Chain take-up for what ? Max. rear cog would be same as NR rear. NR front cannot accommodate a small chain ring.

Also, what front mech. was supposed to be used with the Rally ?

I believe some CR listers runs NR rear and front with max. largest cog in rear and min. ring in front. How would the Rally add benefit ?

Thanks.
