I recently got a 1966 carlton flyer in horrible condition but all of the original parts (except front hub) were there (thanx Thomas Reitz!) As this was my first "Record" group I was quite surprised at how different the parts are from nuovo record parts.

If want to put together a 1964 grouppo, the only part that is dated on those grouppos is the hub locknuts.

Here are some things you would be looking for

151 bcd crankset with decent hardware, might cost $120 early record headset with no <C> on it, might cost $100 record bottom bracket (not nuovo record - thin cups), might cost $80 "No Record" high flange hubset, probably $150 Front derailleur with cable stop, probably $50+ steel pedals in good condition with toe-strap loops, probably $60 - $70 early downtube shifters with cable guides, probably $30 proper weinmann brakeset (i've never seen mine on ebay), probably $50 NOS weinmann gum hoods (as rare as world logo hoods), probably $20 proper rims, at least $60 - $80, maybe more an actual vintage brooks Pro saddle (out in 1963), probably $80 the right freewheel (?), probably > $30 the right chain (?), probably > $30

If you can possibly find all of these parts, then I get a sum-total price of about $870 or more just for the above parts, not to mention fasteners, bar plugs, etc.

if your nuovo record grouppo is date-matched then maybe i'd say the original owner was a racer and the owner upgraded to nuovo record all in a certain year, and leave it at that.
