I'm sure that, in the end, I'm going to regret sending this message but here goes anyway:
In my experience, there were 3 types of shift level bosses manufactured by Simplex. Yet these all were perfectly cylindrical at the tip (unlike Campagnolo bosses), hence the use of some extra hardware that isn't used with Italian shifters. Here's the list of styles: 1) The type used with the clamp-on levers. These used a relatively coarse thread for the fixing bolts. 2) A brazed-on boss - which looks like the one in Mitchell Gass's photo - that uses the same coarse threaded fixing bolts that come with the clamp-on levers. Note, too, that the square section at the base uses slightly different dimensions than Campagnolo. By the way, these bosses were common on the 1970s Falcons that we all remember with such great affection. 3) A slightly different brazed-on boss - which also looks like the one in Mitchell Gass's photo - but which uses the same fine threads for the fixing bolts as Campagnolo. I've seen these on later Peugeots, such as PSV-10s and PGN10-s made in the early 1980s. I've noticed that Campagnolo made 2 lengths of fixing bolts and the Simplex bolts are the same size as the longer of the Campagnolo bolts. (If you try to use short Campagnolo bolts as a replacement, they won't work. I discovered this phenomenon while trying to upgrade my own Peugeot.)
Note that there are also Huret shift lever bosses that _appear_
to be identical to the Simplex bosses. Whether or not they
really are is beyond my ken.
