There have been half links for as long as I remember. In the old days they had a loose, clevis like, pin and a tiny cotter pin to hold it in place. These days KMC makes them in 3/32", 1/8" and 3/16". These are installed with a rivet tool. I understand they can be used with a derailleur, but I don't know which chains they are compatible with.
