I don't think it would have been a matter of "discontinuing" the dropouts. Campagnolo would have had a "ton" of them forged in one batch and then not reordered. It would have taken quite a while to use up all the ones they made in one batch I'd think.
Incidentally, I think the chain holder (Portacatena) was a total flop; sure wasn't spec't on any bikes I ever saw. I ran one on an early '80s De Rosa Pro just for fun and it worked great but sure didn't help the wheel dish.
