I will let some of the senior members speak up on behalf of the "official" reasons for inch pitch. But I will comment that any bicycles I have built up with the inch pitch have had a different feel that seems to agree with what i have heard for the reason of inchers. The inch pitch were very thick chainrings on the older bicycles and it was often said they offered superbe stiffness and the solid feel from pedal to wheel.
