My 50's Hobbs has rear dropout spacing of 114mm.

That seems an odd size to me for a freewheel hub bike.

Is my frame out of alignment or was it designed for a three speed hub?

Anybody know what the rear dropout spacings were on post war British bikes?

Post war spacings went from 110mm, to 115 mm, to 120 mm, and then to 126 mm, depending on date and intended usage. Not all BW hubs had matching cones on both sides, and you should be able to use a shorter cone on the left to give more space on the right. It need not be a BW cone, so long as it has a similar profile and outside diameter.
