It's not clear that such engagement would occur with old-style chains that have protruding rivets. My guess is that the protruding rivets would defeat the much of the functionality of the ramps.

Yes, you should always avoid shifting under full load with old style chain. With old style freewheels it was not possible to shift under full load, so this wasn't an issue.

That's why when Hyperglide first came in there was a rash of chain breakages. These failures were incorrectly attributed to some imagined deficiency of the chains, but it was actually the fact that Hyperglide made possible full load shifting that led to the failures.

I doubt that this is true if you use a modern ramped cluster.
