Overlap is something that I had to adapt to on one bike as well, I was able to just remember to hold my right foot high enough to avoid it at signal lights where I did not wish to drop a foot.

There is a component that no one has mentioned yet, and that is shoe size and toe clip size, no problem for some can be a pain for others on a bike with the same front center dimension. Especially for those middle size bikes where foot size of the rider can vary quite a bit. Crank size can also move things a bit, but you do the best one can , correct?
