Norris Lockley wrote Doug, if you did 240 miles in a 12.hour race in 1954, you must have been

far short of the national competition record ! By any chance was Ron Kitching competing in the race.

Norris I've checked up my result sheet for the day and I was slighly incorrect over the mileage it should have read 238 miles 400yds. As regards being anywhere near a competition record I would have had to ride another nearly 20 miles to be anywhere near Ray Booty's 257.miles 520 yards in which he won the National in 1954 .The record for 12 hours in 1954 was held by E .Britton of the Yorkshire Road Club 262.16 miles. A 240 plus mileage ride was considered a reasonable distance for an average clubman at the time!

Ron Kitching would'nt have been eligible to ride in any Sussex Cyclists Association as the rules only allowed the County affiliated clubs to compete. These rules were changed in the 1960's and entries were made open to all club members in the Road Times Trial Club.

Sorry about pinching a couple of miles folks!! Good for the ego I suppose!!
