Subject: [CR]RE: final thoughts on drilling track forks

In response to a question about the type of fork crown that bent, thanks to John Thompson, a photo of the fork crown area is now on his site at the following URL:

http://www.os2.dhs.org/~john/bent-fork.jpg

The fork had been used for about 15,000 miles. It failed by bending in the area of the crown itself – between the section where the steerer tube is brazed into the top of the crown and the section where the fork blades come up into the crown. The fork blades are not bent, and the hole for the brake wasn’t near where the fork crown bent, so it wasn’t weakened by the drilling – although this one was factory drilled.

The flat sections at the top of the crown are no longer completely perpendicular to the steerer tube.
