Yes, that's a concern. I chose the brass wire over steel wire for that reason. The rims I just cleaned are hard anodized and seemed to handle it well, but a polished rim might be dicey. In either case, move quickly and don't push hard. I was surprised at how readily the glue came off even with minimal pressure.
