Hello,
I have a question for all you French/Simplex experts out there. I recently bought a set of old wheels with 27" x 1 ΒΌ Rigida, Chrolux Chromage Superieur rims with a really cool brake surface pattern, old Stella spokes and what appears to be Normandy Sport hubs. Hubs are marked but look a little different than other sport hubs I have seen in the past. My question is concerning the date of the rear quick release. It came with a set of Simplex QRs (this is why I bought the wheels) The front QR was the standard Simplex type from the late 60's through the 70's with a black rubber covered handle. The rear QR is different. It is same style, almost identical, but is much longer and beefier...no jokes please ;) This is a little hard to explain. It is not like the Simplex QRs from the late 70's early 80's that have handles like a Campy QRs. It did not come with a rubber cover (again no jokes please) and the trade mark 'Simplex' on the handle is more pronounced than the normal QR...same with the 'made in France' on the reverse side. The knurled section is also much finer. The most exciting part is the finish, or lack of finish. It appears to have been chromed but the finish is very worn. Worn to the point I can see what appears to be bronze. Could this be an early example of the Simplex QR made from bronze? Would this help date the wheel set? I have seen a similar set of wheels on a 50's PX50. What is the date of this rear quick release?
I can also provide a set of photos to someone who believes they can help date this QR?
Thanks for the help in advance.
Regards, Rich Robinson
