If you look at this picture from the Shellwin hub auction, the hubs are not straight pull when laced and they use traditional elbowed spokes. http://i2.ebayimg.com/03/i/07/10/0c/60_1.JPG

Just like the paper clip, elbowed spokes are more sophisticated than people imagine.
