Earle, It sounds like components were changed out. Maybe fuzzy memory on owner's part? The deraillers and shifter sound like they were lifted from a newer Super Course. Are they labled "Suntour" or "Raleigh"?
Being a Carlton made frame, the bottom bracket threading should be normal, 1.37 in. x 24 tpi. (also the steerer tube should be 24 tpi)
