     That sounds like a 5/16" diameter axle - they typically are threaded at 26 tpi, if I recall correctly. It's not a cammons size today, although it's still used for things like the _front_ Suzue Basic (SIL-SP) Track hub. In days of yore some nice front hubs, such as the Racelite used this size axle. But so did a lot of cheap hubs...
