It wasn't all that thick, just tough and flexible, so it wouldn't wear out too fast, preferably last a couple of seasons. You described it quite well. I've told lots of riders repeatedly to do it that way, but the DB's would rather knot up their legs than learn proper track behaviour meant to be good for their best riding in mind. So then I tell them nothing anymore. Their loss, not mine. Maybe they're so good it's no longer necessary. Evolution, modern medicine, diet, training, who knows ?
