Actually, when us old farts joined, the rule was "20 years old or more". But when we got to 2003, Dale decided he didn't want to allow the 20 years rule to bring in bikes made in 1984 (maybe he doesn't like George Orwell), so he imposed the 1983 cutoff.

Certainly some bikes and components made during that time must have some merit. For what it's worth, sales of some bikes and parts from that time-period would imply there is quite a bit of interest around.
