Thanks Matthew,
Those are my people!!!
I can't recall why but I wasn't there that day. That was a time when I was totally immersed in the NYC racing scene. I can name someone in almost every photo, even spectators. Many of them are people who I'm still in touch with. One of those CRC (yellow jerseys) guys on the podium is having us over to dinner next Saturday... I didn't notice anyone who I know to be on the CR list but I'm sure there are some.
The Toga guys that you see again and again in the photos are Brian Searchinger and Ian Jackson. Ian was not a regular Toga rider. He was an elite rider that Toga owner Lenny Preheim must have drafted for the day. Brian was a Toga main-stay. He crashed that same Sachs / Toga bike the following year in the Tour of Long Island and bent the fork. That afternoon Lenny was standing in the parking lot of our motel trying to figure out how to straighten it. He asked me to help. I took the fork and crawled under a car. I found a spot in the suspension members where I could wedge the fork and get some leverage. A couple of tugs and I got it pretty good... I emerged, handed him the fork and, trying to act cool, strolled away. They put the bike back together and Brian won the next stage. The following day we were all at a diner and Lenny picked up the check for our whole team as a thank you. I remember feeling pretty pleased with myself.
