I have a 77 Super Course I bought new and my memory is that the cable housings exited from under the tape near brake levers. Maybe because it was a 25 1/2" frame and the cable housings only came in one length? The housings were indeed the spiral metal variety. I found that polyethylene(I think) housing liner helps the old housing if you can get it in there.(and can find it) Or just use lined brake cable housing like I did since the original was too short when I changed the routing to under the tape exiting at stem. The newer styles of slippery cables also help reduce friction. The old setup worked ok at first but goes downhill with use. The newer cable and housing works better and longer. Lastly, I have to buy tandem cable for the rear derailleur.
