That was an issue with all canvas-cord tyres, especially if underinflated.

The move to nylon fabric only occurred toward the end of Dunlop's run with bicycle tires. (I seem to recall that Canadian Dunlop 590s were available for quite a while after Dunlop UK got out of the bike tire biz. Those were great tires.)

I recall hearing that a similar situation obtained with tubulars...Dunlop reportedly made the Very Best, but they discontinued them even earlier than the Raleigh debacle. I never got to ride (or even see) Dunlop tubulars, but older cyclists used to wax rhapsodic over them.
