Does a Mavic SSC derailleur fare any better? It's true that I'm not a frequent shifter, and that I'll be running this with tight gearing.

The appeal is, in part, to keep things quite "French" -- and also the flexibility/freedom of friction, as well as aesthetics. The Simplex friction shifters with the cutouts are extremely beautiful.
