Now that makes more sense than any technical explanation concerning weight or efficiency, ot tradition for that matter. Same reason people like to drive a sports car with stiff suspension and quick steering with no excess rubber in it. I can see where a 1/2" pitch roller chain would be more stretchy and compliant, isolating you from where the rubber meets the road.
