I often compare PX-10 versus the all-Campy Italian bikes of the era to an MG-TC versus a Ferrari Testa Rosa. The Ferrari was more sophisticated and faster, but the MG had a much more important impact on sports car racing at the grassroots level.
Actually, I think this analogy gives too much credit to Italian bikes. There is no credible evidence that the Italian bikes were any "faster" than a PX-10. In fact, since the PX-10 was a pound or two lighter than most all-Campy Italian bikes of the time, one might even argue it had a performance edge given riders of equal ability. Certainly the PX-10 won it's share of classics and at least one TdF, not to mention Thevenet's victories on the PY-10, the PX-10's immediate descendant.
Would I have taken a Cinelli Supercorsa over a PX-10 for the same price in 1972? Definitely. Would I take the Cinelli now at the same price? Yes. But Peter's point is that they were not, and are not, at the same price, but at prices that make the PX-10 the better value. That value is much of why the PX-10 is loved by many collectors, just as the Model T is loved more than Packard.

Hi, Mark & CR Mates---
This PX-10 for three grand has been rotting away on Yellow Jersey's site for several years....And unless I'm mistaken, it was originally listed at 5k or so...

Yes, Peter, that and the pre-war RRA for $6k (or whatever). Sure why, no t.
Personally I cannot abide the words "investment" and "bicycle" in the same
sentence. And try to avoid the marques that have, for no fault of their own, like Masi and Colnago, been so often hijacked by the scam artists and
garage sale profiteers. One of the real hallmarks of the PX-10 was (and is) its unmatched value for money. This kind of nonsense, hopefully put paid by the marketplace, just despoils that. At least you weren't asked to make your Western Union moneyorder for $6500 out to the Nigerian National Oil Co. Ltd. Pty, Abuja. OR does that come later?
