Good tip Sheldon.
That really helps as you decribed.
It also frees the nipple away from the rim. Often the nipple has been turned
so hard into the ferrule or rim surface that the nipple gets galled or
wedged into the seat. Sometimes a drop of lube helps, but your tip resolves
that issue, provided the thread on spoke and nipple aren't corroded and
frozen together.
Then the spoke will still windup and either crack loose or break / twist off
as you try to unthread it.
