A solvent based paint or varnish stripper should work, but I don't know if you can still buy that kind. Most of them now will flush away with water, so I suspect they contain lye and would attack aluminum. Other than that you could try acetone, laquer thinner or some other strong aromatic solvent like MEK. Whatever you use, try it out on the bottom of the stem where it won't show, to see if it's safe.
