Hi John, I have a couple old gas-pipe French bikes with them (less expensive like you suggested). Astra's by Motobecane. They're no lightweights, but they ride very nicely. Huret Alvit derailleurs with the long-stem downtube shifters. They shift quite well. I have an extra pair in my parts bin if you'd like them. Dave Whitney Poland, Maine
